Sea Rim State Park

Location: Sabine Pass, Jefferson County

Sea Rim State Park is a spot where campers can wake up to the sound of waves crashing on the shore. This state park features beachside camping, making it one of the best camping spots on the Upper Texas Coast to enjoy the Gulf of Mexico’s beauty. Fishing, birdwatching, and beachcombing are just a few activities you can enjoy here. Sea Rim State Park offers fifteen campsites with electricity and water hookups. The park provides both beachside and bayside camping options, including beach wheelchairs, ensuring that visitors have a variety of experiences to choose from.

San Luis Pass County Park

Location: Follet’s Island, Brazoria County

At the eastern-most end of Follet’s Island, San Luis Pass County Park offers beachside RV camping with views of the Gulf of Mexico and San Luis Pass. Campers can enjoy fishing, birdwatching, and beachcombing. San Luis Pass offers paved full-service RV camping, cabins, and a climate-controlled meeting room. There’s also an interpretive center, a pavilion, restrooms, fish cleaning stations, paved parking, and a boat launch. No tent camping allowed.

Quintana Beach County Park

Location: Quintana, Brazoria County

Further into Brazoria County is Quintana Beach County Park, a 52-acre beachfront park with day-use amenities and overnight facilities. The park offers paved, full-service RV campsites and self-contained cabins. There are restrooms and showers, covered pavilions, picnic tables, grills, a playground, a volleyball court. Explore the hiking trails, pedestrian beach, fish on a wooden lighted fishing pier, and access to the west jetty. No tent camping allowed.

Juneteenth Celebrations. You’ll find Juneteenth celebrations in Galveston, the birthplace of Juneteenth, and nearby Beaumont and Port Arthur. Check with the Convention & Visitors Bureau for details on planned events. Activities begin June 14 and continue through June in some instances.  

First Thursday at AMSET in Beaumont. Enjoy free admission and refreshments at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas. The museum collection includes Texas Fine Art, Texas Folk Art, Regional/Southeast Texas Folk Art, Early American Folk Art, Mexican Folk Art, Early American Art (before 1970), European Art, and more. Thursdays at The Bryan Museum in Galveston. Every Thursday in Galveston, locals flock to The Bryan Museum for this weekly concert from 4 to 7 pm featuring local talent and a curated selection of wines. Thursdays through July 27, Summer Concert Series at Menard Park in Galveston. Saturdays through August 26, Yoga at Cattail Marsh in Beaumont. Experience the serenity of a quiet morning of yoga at Cattail Marsh Wetlands. These free Vinyasa yoga classes are held from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Bring your mat and enjoy this free class overlooking the Cattail Marsh Boardwalk. Saturdays and Sundays thru Sept. 3, Bucket Brigade at East Beach. If you want to learn about the dynamic beach environment during your visit, Artist Boat offers beach tours with hands-on activities that shed light on Galveston’s turbid water, marine debris, Sargassum landings, and more. All ages are welcome. Tours begin at 11 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm and last 45 minutes. (Galveston County) 

Now – June 24, Coming Home: Paintings by Forrest Bess at the City by the Sea Museum in Palacios. Born in Bay City, Forrest Bess’ paintings are exhibited throughout the country, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and numerous others. These “Coming Home” paintings are on loan to the Museum from private collections, with some that have never been seen publicly. Bess was also known for designing camouflage during his time in the US Army Corps of Engineers. The museum is a recommended stop in the Texas History Trip Plan. (Matagorda County)

June 24, Fort Velasco Day at the Freeport Historical Museum in Freeport. Fort Velasco Day commemorates the 191st anniversary of the Battle of Fort Velasco, the first true military conflict of the Texas Revolution, with a living history event featuring reenactors from across Texas. Visitors will experience 1830s Texas life and conflict at the mouth of the Brazos River. (Brazoria County) 

June 25, “Velasco & Quintana: A Glimpse into 19th Century Texas” Exhibit Opening, Brazosport Museum of Natural Science in Clute. Make plans to celebrate the opening of this new archaeology exhibit featuring artifacts recovered from the 19th-century town sites of Velasco and Quintana. This unique exhibit will reside in the museum’s Raymond Walley Hall of Archaeology. (Brazoria County)

June 23 & 30, Concerts in the Park at Independence Park in Pearland. Enjoy a live band in the park from 7 to 9 pm. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets for this family-friendly event. (Brazoria County)

July 15, 10th Annual Albatross Old Smokey Throwdown in Galveston. Register early, pack your Old Smokey, and compete in this annual cookout hosted by The Albatross. July 20 & August 10, Jazz at the Lake at the Downtown Event Center in Beaumont. The City of Beaumont’s annual Jazz at the Lake returns for summer nights of live entertainment, cool jazz, and fun. The event is held indoors from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Event Centre. (Jefferson County)

July 27 – 29, Great Texas Mosquito Festival in Clute. This three-day family festival has been a Clute tradition for over 40 years. Over the next few weeks, Lone Star Coastal Alliance is releasing its beta “Trip Adventures” based on local experts’ suggestions of what not to miss when visiting. The four beta Trip Adventures are now available on the Alliance travel website ExploreLoneStarCoastal.com/ including downloadable PDFs. 

These travel ideas focus on four themes:

• Nature Exploration
• Texas History
• Texas Mystique & Culture
• Balancing Act

“With this exciting update to the website, and the launch of the beta Trip Adventures, local, regional, national and international travelers have new and improved tools to experience our expansive and unique mosaic of natural, cultural, and historical sites and recreational opportunities, from the Matagorda Peninsula to the Sabine Pass – all within just an hour or two drive from Houston and the gateway city of Galveston.”

Each beta trip plan highlights Matagorda, Brazoria, Galveston, and Jefferson Counties, with at least 4 sites in each county, and some fun facts, activities or resources interspersed. They will be available on the Alliance travel website ExploreLoneStarCoastal.com/ and in downloadable PDF. This is a free tool to make planning a trip easier. Lone Star Coastal Alliance plans to release more detailed Trip Adventures in the fall. 

To say we’re excited about releasing our beta Trip Adventures is an understatement. This results from a decade-old coalition of local citizens, businesses, governments, and non-governmental organizations partnering to highlight the region. 

“With this exciting update to the website, and the launch of the beta Trip Adventures, local, regional, national and international travelers have new and improved tools to experience our expansive and unique mosaic of natural, cultural, and historical sites and recreational opportunities, from the Matagorda Peninsula to the Sabine Pass – all within just an hour or two drive from Houston and the gateway city of Galveston,” said Elizabeth Winston-Jones, Executive Director of the Lone Star Coastal Alliance. 

The Alliance is releasing Nature Exploration as the first beta Trip Adventures.

“Our region is unique in its ecological diversity and, consequently, is among the world’s most diverse and abundant birding destinations. This will bring awareness and travelers to the region, elevating habitat conservation while enhancing our economies,” said Pete Deichmann, Land Director, Houston Audubon.

And, history buffs will appreciate the suggested stops and tours highlighted in the Trip Plan focused on history which is also posted.

“Not only is this region a short drive from Houston, but it is also unique in its cultural and geographic significance and diversity, making it an ideal candidate for National Recreation Area designation,” said J.P. Bryan, Chair, Lone Star Coastal Alliance, legendary entrepreneur and businessman, and founder of the Bryan Museum in Galveston. “National Park Service affiliation would put this region on par with the nation’s finest public lands and heritage sites and attract significant economic benefits through exposure to large national and international markets.”

Later this month, explorers can expect to see Trip Plans for Texas Mystique & Culture and Balancing Act. 

Winston-Jones adds, “We wish to thank all of the local, County, and State tourism representatives and site managers, local business owners, and non-governmental organizations who contributed their time, insights, expertise, and local knowledge to make these Trip Adventures possible.”

March 24 – 26, Matagorda Bay Birdfest in Palacios. Choose from fourteen bird tours, enjoy the Saturday Palacios Parade of Birds, raptor display, and various speakers during the Birdfest weekend. Matagorda County leads the nation in the number of bird species counted in the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for 20 of the last 25 years. (Matagorda County)

April 1, High Island Sanctuaries Free Admission Day. Houston Audubon is opening its sanctuaries to free admission from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Explore the Kathrine G. McGovern Canopy Walkway, The Rookery at Clay Bottom Pond at Smith Oaks, the drip at Katrina’s Corner at Smith Oaks, Purkey’s Pond at Boy Scout Woods, and enjoy miles of trails and boardwalks. Check-in at visitor kiosks at Smith Oaks and Boy Scout Woods.

April 1, Wings Over Surfside hosted by Bird City Surfside. The event offers speakers, a live birds of prey program, crafts, art, wine tasting, and other activities. Activities take place at the Surfside Bird and Butterfly Trail at 418 Parkview.

April 20-23, FeatherFest Birding & Nature Photography Festival. Whether you’re a serious or casual bird-watcher, nature photographer, or someone who wants some exercise, fresh air, and a touch of sunshine, purchase tickets to FeatherFest. FeatherFest is four fun-filled days of incredible birding and nature photography field trips throughout the area, including Anuhuac, Beaumont, High Island, League City, Pearland, Seabrook, and more. April 29-30, Migration Celebration at the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters Campus. Activities at San Bernard include a Birds of Prey show, air rifle target shooting, bow and arrow target shooting, butterfly encounters, fishing, a touch tank, kayaking, and more. The Migration Celebration is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service event from the Texas Mid-coast National Wildlife Complex underwritten by the Friends of the Brazoria Wildlife Refuges. (Brazoria County)

The Upper Texas Coast offers the best spots for birding during Spring Migration and birding festivals for avid and novice birders. We encourage you to grab your favorite birding gear, clean your binoculars, pack your field guide and download that favorite app. Spring migration begins in March and is in full swing from April to early May. Plus, in this region, you’ll see history along the way. 

Let’s get started in Jefferson County at Cattail Marsh Wetlands and Boardwalk. Cattail offers 900 acres of wetlands with a variety of recreational activities made easier with its new boardwalk offering close viewing of wildlife and its eight miles of gravel-level roads ideal for hiking, jogging, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, and wildlife photography along the banks of Hildebrandt Bayou and Willow Marsh Bayou.  

Next on your list should be Sea Rim State Park. The Park offers 5.2 miles of Gulf shore and 4,000 acres of marshlands. The Texas Parks and Wildlife website includes a Birds Checklist for the Spring. The park checklist lists abundant, common, uncommon, occasional, and rare birds seen at the park. 

Another stop for your list is McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. This park is popular for wildlife photography, is open daily, and is free. Check the US Fish & Wildlife Service website for updates on the park. Another park to add to your list is the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. The park provides a bird checklist in the visitors’ center (open on weekends) and at the office during regular business hours. The staff recommends Woodlot Trail and Willows Trail for this time of year which is attractive to migrating birds for their water drip. 

You’ll also want to include Sabine Woods in Port Arthur on your list. This chenier ridge or oak mott attracts thousands of migrant birds. Texas Ornithological Social owns the sanctuary and the Golden Triangle Audubon Society maintains it. There’s also a new birding site overlooking a pond on the former Palms at Pleasure Island Golf Course. 

Galveston County

In Galveston County, on Galveston’s West End stop at the Oppenheimer Birding Observatory. In partnership with Artist Boat, the Gulf Coast Design Lab at The University of Texas at Austin designed this project. It overlooks the Coastal Heritage Preserve and is a public pull-off birding access along Stewart Road. The northern wall is composed of horizontal 2×4 panels to hide visitors from the birds while still allowing them to use binoculars and other equipment. 

While in Galveston County, you’ll want to start or finish off on Bolivar Peninsula for the Horseshoe Marsh Bird Sanctuary and Frenchtown Road. While there’s no public access, you can make observations from Hwy 187 and Loop 88. Check with Houston Audubon for updates on the trail. Houston Audubon operates several sanctuaries in High Island, including Boy Scout Woods and Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary. 

Brazoria County

In Brazoria County, you’ll want to stop at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a 43,000-acre refuge with salt grass prairies, mud flats, fresh and saltwater marshes and lakes, and salt cedars. Most importantly, it’s a favorite for many coastal and migratory species. You should also look up the Quintana Neotropic Bird Sanctuary. It offers trails, ponds, park benches and the Alongis Tower, and during the month of April, Gulf Coast Observatory offers tours and information at this site.  

Matagorda County

Matagorda County is home to the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center (MCBNC) in Bay City. This area offers 34 acres and is on the Colorado River in Bay City, Texas. MCBNC has six botanical gardens and three major ecosystems. And, if you enjoy camping, add Matagorda Bay Nature Park to your list. It’s located where the Colorado River meets the Gulf of Mexico.

March 11, St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Surfside Beach. This parade is one of the long-standing traditions in Surfside. Festivities include a colorful parade, a costume contest, and a reenactment of the Battle of Velasco. Don’t forget to wear your green. All proceeds benefit the Surfside Beach Police/EMS and Volunteer Fire Departments. (Brazoria County)

March 13 – 17, Spring Camps with Artist Boat in Galveston. Art meets science in Artist Boat’s 2023 Spring Break Eco-Art Camp sessions for kids 5-10. Campers experience science and art enrichment with the creation of eco-art. Each camper creates high-quality art projects illustrating what they learned in camp. A second ECO-Camp is tailored for kids ages 11-15 and offers an opportunity to explore the wetlands through canoeing and nature walks. They’ll also learn to fish with a seine, cast netting, and crabbing. Both day camps are from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. (Galveston County)

March 14-17, Spring into Action at The Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute. From Shakespeare to puppets, to “The Accidental Astronauts” planetarium show, watercolor card painting, and ending with St. Patrick’s Day fun, you’ll find plenty to keep the kids entertained during Spring Break at the Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute. March 18, Spring Market Day & Food Truck Festival in Freeport. This seasonal Freeport event is held in downtown Freeport and features local vendors offering hand-made items and popular area food trucks from 10 am to 4 pm. (Brazoria County)

March 18, Spring Astronomy Day at the BASF Planetarium at The Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute. Enjoy safe solar viewing, mini Planetarium shows, and astronomy-related demonstrations from noon to 3 pm. Plus, this event is free and open to the public. (Brazoria County)

March 21 & 29, Coastal Creations at Matagorda Bay Nature Park. Create a coastal-themed painting instructed by our amateur park resident artists during an afternoon visit to the park. The class is from 2 to 3:30 pm. You’ll love the view and the solitude of Matagorda Bay Nature Park. The cost is $25 with all materials provided. (Matagorda County)

March 24 – 26, Matagorda Bay Birdfest in Palacios. Choose from fourteen bird tours, enjoy the Saturday Palacios Parade of Birds, raptor display, and various speakers during the Birdfest weekend. Did you know Matagorda County leads the nation in the number of bird species counted in the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for 20 of the last 25 years? Put this on your calendar. April 1, Jimmy Simmons Jazz Festival at the Jefferson Theatre in Beaumont. Calling all jazz lovers, Lamar University is hosting its 4th Annual Jimmy Simmons Jazz Festival Saturday, April 1. Special guests for the event will be 17-time Grammy-nominated Yellowjackets, featuring music from their most recent release. (Jefferson County)

April 1, Cajun Heritage Fest in Port Arthur. Cajun Fest is Port Arthur, Texas’ twist on celebrating Cajun music, dancing, and flavors drawn from their Louisiana neighbors. This is a  day of making new friends and catching up with old ones. (Jefferson County).

April 8, Space Center Cruisers Spring Car Show in Walter Hall Park in League City. This car show benefits youth scholarships and the Texas Lions Camp for Children. The show is from 7 am to 4 pm (Galveston County)

April 13 – 16, Tall Ship Galveston at Pier 21. The 2023 Tall Ships® Galveston festival offers tours of participating ships, special events, sail-away excursions, music, food, and fun in a family-friendly setting. Galveston Island is one of three ports for the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Gulf Coast 2023 Series, which features a fleet of ships traveling across the Gulf of Mexico as they visit other participating cities. April 20, May 11, and June 21, Sundown Concert Series in Beaumont. This free outdoor summer concert series is a free live music escape you and your kids will enjoy. April 20-23, FeatherFest Birding & Nature Photography Festival. Whether you’re a serious or casual bird-watcher, nature photographer, or someone who wants some exercise, fresh air, and a touch of sunshine, purchase tickets to FeatherFest. FeatherFest is four fun-filled days of incredible birding and nature photography field trips throughout the area, including Anuhuac, Beaumont, High Island, League City, Pearland, Seabrook, and more. April 21 – June 24, Coming Home: Paintings by Forrest Bess at the City by the Sea Museum in Palacios. Born in Bay City, Forrest Bess’ paintings are exhibited throughout the country, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and numerous others. These “Coming Home” paintings are on loan to the Museum from private collections from Matagorda County, with some never seen publicly. Bess is also known for designing camouflage during his time US Army Corps of Engineers. (Matagorda County)

April 22, Rally on the River in Bay City. Stop by our annual Rally on the River at Riverside Park and enjoy games, crafts, activities, and food trucks from 10 am to 2 pm. Plus, there’s a river paddle and river clean-up at 9 am. And the park offers campsite rentals. (Matagorda County)

April 29, The Grand Kids Festival in Galveston. The Annual Grand Kids Festival celebrates children, families, and folk art in Galveston’s historic downtown Cultural Arts District. Presented by The Grand 1894 Opera House, this family event offers live entertainment, street performances, Missoula Children’s Theatre performance, and various children’s activities. This year’s theme is “Texas Western.” Admission is free. (Galveston County)

April 30, VIVA! Beaumont Hispanic Heritage Festival in Downtown Beaumont. The festival highlights local artisans, restaurants, groups, attractions, and more, shining a light on the Hispanic culture of Beaumont during this FREE event. Enjoy food vendors, entertainment, activities, and games. (Jefferson County)

April 29-30, Migration Celebration at the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters Campus. Activities include a Birds of Prey show, air rifle target shooting, bow and arrow target shooting, butterfly encounters, fishing, a touch tank, kayaking, and more. The Migration Celebration is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service event from the Texas Mid-coast National Wildlife Complex underwritten by the Friends of the Brazoria Wildlife Refuges. (Brazoria County)

April 28 & 29, Riverfest in Freeport. Come out for barbecue, live music, boat races, and more at this annual event at the Freeport Municipal Park. Plus, the kids will love the petting zoo, face painting, nightly fireworks, inflatables, and a crocodile experience. The festival is from 6 pm to midnight on Friday and from noon to midnight on Saturday and admission is free. (Brazoria County) 

May 6-8 & May 13-14, Galveston Historic Homes Tour. Every May, the Galveston Historical Foundation offers public tours through privately owned homes and Galveston’s architectural history during its annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour. In addition to the tours, the GHF hosts numerous special events, allowing guests unique experiences in many tour homes and historic sites across the island. (Galveston County)
