Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuge serves as a salt marsh sanctuary and is only open to the public for waterfowl hunting by special use permit.

The refuge’s Dressing Point Island is one of the most prominent bird rookeries on the Texas Coast. Roseate spoonbills, white Ibis, snowy and reddish egrets vie for nesting space along side the brown pelicans.
