Fishing guides lure business as popularity of outdoors spikes in Galveston County

“Growing popularity among outdoor activities and pent-up desire to get out of the house have charter fishing companies reeling in a good catch of business this summer.

Professional fishing guides still are making up for several months of closure in the spring, but the pandemic has spiked popularity in the outdoors and driven more first-time anglers to try out the sport.

For people who want to be outside and feel safe, fishing is one of the best options, said Shane Cantrell, owner and operator of Galveston Sea Ventures.

Summer is normally busy anyway and the company has a limited number of trips, so actual business may not be much greater than last year, Cantrell said.

But demand is way up, he said.

“I’m having to turn trips away,” Cantrell said.
