The mission of the Matagorda County Museum is to collect, preserve and protect the county’s cultural heritage so it is only fitting that the museum makes its home in a historical building constructed in 1918 as the Federal Post Office in Bay City.  To those ends, the museum’s exhibits include early Texas exploration, regional ranching and farming heritage along with a display of artifacts from the shipwreck La Belle, a 17-century vessel of French explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

The Matagorda County Children’s Museum, a hands-on historical town, is perfect for exploring life as it was lived long ago in Matagorda County, Texas.
