UTC 083A

The Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Nature Center, once known as the Davis tract, is one of the last remaining large undeveloped properties with quality wetlands. The 148 acre park provides a home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The site is an excellent habitat for migrant birds, such as Sand hill cranes, great blue herons, ibises, American egrets, great white herons, owls and various song birds, which use the area to nest and feed. Occasionally the endangered whooping cranes have been known to visit. Ducks, pelicans, shore birds and wading birds all enjoy the large isolated pond along Clear Creek. The site’s wetlands serve as a nursery for many species of fish. The wetlands to the east help to provide homes to mammals such as deer, bobcat, coyote, and raccoons.

Paved trails and several bird blinds provide an ideal birdwatching environment. Picnic tables and restrooms are also on site.

Located in League City, the Clear Creek Paddling Trail meanders 5.5 miles through Clear Creek. There are 3 launch sites at Lynn Gripon Park at Countryside, Walter Hall Park and Heritage Park. Paddlers will enjoy scenic views along their journey and may spot some of the wildlife that live in and around the creek, including wading birds, alligators, and deer. There are multiple parks along the trail where you can stop for a picnic to recharge before getting back on the trail.

Launch Sites

Launching from Heritage Park, you’ll head west and paddle through wider sections of the creek. You’ll make your way beneath Highway 3, where you’ll encounter flocks of swallows flitting in and out of nests they’ve built on the underside of the bridge, and then float past what is quite possibly an alligator nesting area. Keep your eyes peeled for gators in this area. They often stay very still and can be hard to spot.

If you have your own kayak, you can launch from Countryside Park, you will paddle down a somewhat narrow portion of the creek, walled in tightly by dense trees, bushes, and grasses. It has a distinct bayou feel and is incredibly scenic and peaceful.

Launching from Walter Hall Park gives paddlers the option of heading west, taking them further into the creek and its walls of trees, or heading east and paddling toward Clear Lake. This direction also leads to Heritage Park, where you can get out and enjoy a picnic, visit the turtle pond, or just take a break before heading back.

Clear Creek Kayak Rentals provides guided trail tours and kayak rentals from the Heritage Park launch site on the weekends. Reservations are highly recommended.
